I remember as a lad supporting wakefield trinity in the early 60's and the great battles they had with wigan, Eric Ashton for wigan Neil Fox for wakefield. seems like only yesterday. will spend the rest of the evening trying to remember the rest round, wilkinson turner poynton smith vines holliday i bet they remember playing against you Eric RIP wetherby

As a youngster, I had the pleasure of sitting on the ringside at Wigan and witnessing at close hand that very special partnership between Eric Ashton and Billy Boston. It is still the finest club center / wing pairing Rugby League has ever seen. Eric was a great center, a great captain and a true gentleman. In 1992 I had the great honour of being alongside that legendary pairing for the GB tour of Australia. Nothing was too much trouble for Eric, be it signing autographs or posing for photos with fans of all clubs. Today is a very sad one for all Rugby League fans and anyone associated with "the greatest game" My sincere condolences to Doreen and all the Ashton family. RIP. Brian Rouse

Big Mike

Having met Eric and attended functions with him several times, three things struck me about him. He was always immaculate ~ he always looked better than smart. He was a GENTLEMAN ~ more and more of a rare thing these days. But most of all he was classy. I can't think of a better word than that to describe him. Top Quality bloke who happened to grace our game as a top quality player. RIP Eric.

My earliest memory of watching rugby league was of Ashton still captaining Wigan in the early 1960s. What a player. Also, what a man - great humanity about him. Eric's passing is a sad loss.

George Fairhurst Standish Wigan

I rember Eric Ashton signing for Wigan and playing on the left wing his trade mark was to kick inside for David Bolton to score under the posts. What a move it was to then play him at centre to Billy Boston a partnership which was enjoyed for a number of years by all Wigan and rugby league fans alike a true gentleman and not just a great centre but a footballer who could read a game. My condolences to his wife Doreen and to his two daughters. RIP Eric
