First introduced in 1935 with the emergence of France as a Rugby League playing nation, the competition drifted out of favour in the 1950s. There have been a couple of abortive attempts to resurrect the competition, but the reintroduction in 2003 and the inclusion of Russia is planned to give the competition meaning below full Test status.
