Virtual Rugby League Hall of Fame Launched

Golden Lions to celebrate fifty years of the Rugby League World Cup

26 January 2004 --

The first UK website designed to celebrate the heroes of Rugby League has been launched at www.rlhalloffame.org.uk. Its initial aims are to campaign for the induction of a further four Hall of Famers, and to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the first Rugby League World Cup by selecting a Golden Lions team of British players who have excelled in World Cup campaigns.

Steve Newcombe, who has created the Virtual Hall of Fame site, is looking to the whole Rugby League community in Great Britain to record the great players and events of the Greatest Game on the site.

“The Rugby League Hall of Fame was the first sporting Hall of Fame in Britain when it was inaugurated in 1988. We want to celebrate these great players, and the milestone events such as the Rorkes Drift Test in which Hall of Famers played a great part. But much more than that, we want to record the memories and impressions of the whole of Rugby League – players, administrators and spectators alike. The history of Rugby League is a history of the communities it has been played in for over a hundred years. We want to capture the magic of seeing Billy Boston in action at Central Park seen through the eyes of a ten year old boy, as well as finding out just what it was like to try and tackle him in full flight!”

But more than simply attempting the important task of recording the history of the game, the Virtual Hall of Fame intends to campaign for the just recognition of Rugby League’s greats. This year offers a golden opportunity to do just this – the fiftieth anniversary of the first Rugby League World Cup.

“We’re asking people to pick their fantasy team of Rugby League World Cup players.” added Newcombe. “This year’s Tri-Nations competition between Great Britain, New Zealand and Australia will coincide with the anniversary of the first World Cup Final in Paris– won by Dave Valentine’s Great Britain side. What better way to celebrate the old and the new by proclaiming a Golden Lions team, chosen by the Rugby League public. People can make their choice by visiting the Virtual Hall of Fame and selecting from the shortlist of players for each position, along with their choice of team captain.”

The website offers the game an opportunity to reach a worldwide audience with the exploits of the greats of British Rugby League, and an opportunity to capture the life of the communities it has been built on since 1895.
