Golden Lions to celebrate fifty years of the Rugby League World Cup

On-line vote reaches exciting climax

22 October 2004 --

Rugby League fans have until Friday November 12th. to vote for their team of British World Cup greats – the Golden Lions. The Virtual Rugby League Hall of Fame website at www.rlhalloffame.org.uk has been running an on-line poll since the site’s launch in January.

Steve Newcombe, who runs the Virtual Hall of Fame site, is looking to the whole Rugby League community to pay homage to the great players who have represented either Great Britain or the Home Countries since the first World Cup victory in 1954.

“We’re asking people to pick their fantasy team of Rugby League World Cup players.” said Newcombe. “This year’s Tri-Nations competition coincides with the anniversary of the first World Cup Final in Paris– won by Dave Valentine’s Great Britain side. What better way to celebrate the old and the new by proclaiming a Golden Lions team, chosen by the Rugby League public. People can make their choice by visiting the Virtual Hall of Fame and selecting from the shortlist of players for each position, along with their choice of team captain.”

On the Golden Anniversary of the first World Cup win, Great Britain will be taking on Australia at Wigan’s JJB Stadium. “Voting has been steady since the site launched” added Newcombe, “with strong support for greats such as Alan Prescott, Billy Boston, Alex Murphy and Mick “Stevo” Stephenson. Many people have been surprised by the omissions from the list.”

Voting is a simple process. Just visit http://www.rlhalloffame.org.uk/golden.htm and choose from the list for each position. There are biographies of many of the short listed players, and an opportunity to vote for a captain to lead this Dream Team.
