FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Rosenfeld Honoured by Jewish Hall of Fame Southampton, 1 December 2005: Rugby League Hall of Famer Albert Rosenfeld is today being inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. The honour springs from a nomination made by the Virtual Rugby League Hall of Fame website at www.rlhalloffame.org.uk. Rosenfeld was a member of the great Huddersfield “Team of All Talents” and holds the record for tries scored in a season when he scored eighty tries in the 1913-14 season. In his career he averaged more than a try a game (386 tries in 376 games). But the record breaking winger was a five-eighth when he was picked for the First Kangaroos who came to England and Wales in 1908-9. He wasn't by any means a star turn on that tour but he was in the side defeated 5-3 by Huddersfield, who were impressed enough to sign him up that evening. He had, quite coincidentally, fallen for a local mill manager's daughter, and they were to have a long and very happily married life together. Steve Newcombe, who runs the Virtual Hall of Fame site, is rightly proud of Rosenfeld’s induction. “I first contacted the Jewish Hall of Fame around a year ago and thought the opportunity had passed us by for now.” said Newcombe. “But the Jewish Hall of Fame was keen to honour Rozzy once they heard of his record making exploits, and the confirmation came though just a few weeks ago that my nomination was successful. The main point of my site is to let the world know about the great players who have graced our game over the years, and I’m really happy to have made this small contribution.” Rosenfeld joins ex Leeds player Wilf Rosenberg. The South African is mainly recognised for his contribution to South African Rugby Union, but the Jewish Hall of Fame website does show a picture of Wilf in his Leeds days. Since 1979, 315 athletes and sportsmen/women, representing 24 countries, have been elected to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. The IJSHOF Museum is located on the campus of the Wingate Institute for Physical Education and Sport, in Netanya, Israel and the website can be found at http://www.jewishsports.net .
