Test Matches - Australia - New Zealand - Australia and New Zealand 1914

Details from The Vault and Roland Davis "Great Britain Rugby League Tours"

The Lions' second tour was captained by Harold Wagstaff - one of the greatest centres in the game's history, and once again the Ashes were won 2-1. The only test in New Zealand was also won.

The tour will forever be remembered for the victory by 14-6 in the Third Test in Sydney. This game is enshrined in the annals of the game as "The Rorkes Drift Test" named after the famous battle in which outnumbered British soldiers held out against hordes of Zulu warriors.

The opening game of the tour against South Australia brought a record 101-0 victory, including 23 tries. Stanley Moorhouse was the tour's leading try scorer with 19 and Alf Wood kicked 47 goals.

The players received ten shillings (50p) per week at sea and £1 on land, and they each received £60 from the tour profits which exceeded £30,000. On their return home, Britain was at war with the Kaiser.
