Test Matches - Australia - New Zealand - Australia and New Zealand 1920

Details from The Vault and Roland Davis "Great Britain Rugby League Tours"

The Lions' were captained once again by Harold Wagstaff, but although the tour was another financial success the Ashes were lost 2-1 after defeats in the first two Tests.

The tourists also lost for the first time in New Zealand, 24-16 in their opening game in Auckland, but won the remaining nine games including a three match test series. The attendance for the Auckland game of 35,000 is still a record for a British Tour in New Zealand. The opening game in Australia against Metropolis in Sydney also attracted a record attendance of over 67,000.

The tourists wore an all-white strip for the first time. 22 of the 36 man squad were used in Tests, and the tour manager John Wilson played in three games and kicked a goal. Jonty Parkin and Billy Stone both scored hat-tricks in the First test in Auckland, and Jim Bacon scored a try in each New Zealand Test.

Billy Stone (24) and Jim Bacon (23) were the leading try scorers and Ben Gronow kicked a record 65 goals.
