Test Matches - Australia - New Zealand - Australia and New Zealand 1924

Details from The Vault and Roland Davis "Great Britain Rugby League Tours"

Jonty Parkin led the side to a 2-1 Test series victory in Australia and scored tries in all three Tests, but the tourists wearing the now familiar white strip with red and blue vee for the first time lost the three match series in New Zealand, winning only the last Test.

Of 27 games Barrow's Bill Burgess missed just 5, a massive effort for a prop, and centre Tommy Howley (Wigan) missed only 6. Wigan's winger Johnny Ring was leading try scorer with 23 and Jim Sullivan, also of Wigan, making the first of three tours broke the tour record for goals with 84. He began his Test career by landing a 60 yard goal with his first touch in the first Test in Sydney.

Loose forward Frank Gallagher had to play stand off in the second test and became the first Lion to be sent off in a Test down under in the third.

The three New Zealand tests were played within the space of a week and it appeared for a time that the New Zealand leg may be abandoned. Jonty Parkin and Jim Sullivan contracted diphtheria and there was talk of quarantining the whole party.
