Test Matches - Australia - New Zealand - Australia and New Zealand 1954
Details from The Vault and Roland Davis "Great Britain Rugby League Tours"
Hunslet's Dickie Williams led the first tourists to fly to Australia. Billy Boston, the youngest tourist at that time, was selected after only five first tem games, and scored a then record 36 tries. He also equalled the Test record for four tries in the First test against New Zealand. Fellow Welshman Lewis Jones (Leeds) scored a massive 278 points from 127 goals and 8 tries in 21 games. Salford hooker Tom McKinney became the only Irishman ever to tour. The three Ashes tests were watched by almost 180,000 people, but the tour is often best remembered for the abandoned game against New South Wales. The stoppage occurred when all the players were ordered from the field by the referee Aubrey Oxford, who had previously sent off Great Britain's Ray Price for alleged abusive language. The side lost more games in Australia - seven - than any previous side ,and former Kangaroo Ross McKinnon was called in to assist with coaching.
