Test Matches - Australia - New Zealand - Australia and New Zealand 1962
Details from The Vault and Roland Davis "Great Britain Rugby League Tours"
Eric Ashton led the side making his third visit to Australia in five years, following the 1958 Lions Tour and 1960 World Cup. Two outstanding wins in the first two Tests clinched the Ashes, and only a disputed Ken Irvine try and touchline gal gave the Kangaroos an 18-17 victory in the third. The Lions finished this game with 11 men - Derek Turner and Mick Sullivan being sent off along with Australia's Dud Beattie. In New Zealand a run of injuries saw two heavy Test defeats. All time world record points scorer Neil Fox was top points and goal scorer with 227 points from 85 goals and 19 tries. Billy Boston again topped the try scorers with 22, followed by skipper Eric Ashton with 21. Dick Huddart made the most appearances for the second successive tour (23). Neil and Don Fox became the second brothers to tour together. Six players, including Lions Sullivan, Boston and Sayers, were sent off for brawling in a game with New South Wales - won 33-28 by the tourists. This was the first tour where a game was played against a Sydney Premiership side. The all conquering St. George were conquered by the Lions at a packed Sydney Cricket Ground. Famously, Alex Murphy concealed a broken bone in his arm so that he could play in this historic fixture - perhaps the crowing glory of arguably the greatest ever Lions team. Eric Ashton, Alex Murphy and Don fox were all unable to play in New Zealand and Derek Turner took over the captaincy. After the tour a squad of 17 players were chosen for a visit to South Africa where three exhibition games were played. There is an unsavoury side to this visit - Billy Boston could not be considered for selection, despite being top try scorer, purely for the colour of his skin.
