Test Matches - Australia - New Zealand - Australia and New Zealand 1966

Details from The Vault and Roland Davis "Great Britain Rugby League Tours"

Harry Poole, suffering from illness and injury, became the only Lions captain not to play an Ashes test, although he did lead the team to a series win in New Zealand. The side lost a record nine games in Australia, including two Tests.

After wining the first test 17-13, the second was lost 6-4 after Bill Ramsey was sent off. In the third a good position turned into a 14-19 defeat when Cliff Watson was dismissed shortly after half time. Brian Edgar, making his third tour, captained the team in all Ashes Tests.

Alex Murphy was also chosen to make his third tour but withdrew and was replaced by Ian Brooke. Ken Gowers with 134 was top points scorer. Former sprint champion Berwyn Jones was top try scorer with 24 but did not play in a Test.

Two members of the party, Ken Gowers and Bill Burgess, followed their fathers as Lions. Ian Brooke, Bill Burgess, Tommy Bishop, Cliff Watson and Dave Robinson played in all five Tests.
