Bradford Northern's Brian Noble led the side following the withdrawal of Trevor Skerrett. Another selection. former Lion Len Casey, had to withdraw after receiving a six  month ban, and Chris Arkwright, grandson of 1936 tourist Jack Arkwright, had to withdraw because of injury.

A young party had the insurmountable task of winning the Ashes for the first time in 14 years, and end a run of seven successive home and away defeats to Australia. The lost all Tests in both Australia and New Zealand, but became the first seven Test tourist with the historic first fixture in Papua New Guinea.

Brian Noble, Mick Burke, Des Drummond, Keith Mumby, Ellery Hanley, Andy Goodway and Mick Adams became the first Lions to play in seven Tests on tour.

Ronnie Duane returned home after injury in the first game in Darwin, and was replaced by John Basnett. Mick Burke led the goal scorers with 36 and top scored with 80 points in the first Lions tour with fur point tries. Ellery Hanley was top try scorer with 12 - he made most appearances (17) along with Des Drummond. Garry Schofield at 18 became the youngest player to tour.
