Tiny Roger Millward was one of the biggest stars of world rugby league in the 1960s and 1970s, tormenting men twice his size who were unable to lay their hands on this will o' the wisp half-back. Yet he never appeared in a World Cup-winning team. It was not for want of talent or trying, however, and twice he came within a whisper of leading teams to the World title.

His first World Cup tournament in Australia and New Zealand saw him playing stand-off in all three games but Britain performed poorly to win only the New Zealand game.

In 1970 Roger was ruled out of the World Cup with a broken leg and in 1972, after winning selection, a knee injury again kept him out.

In 1975 Millward skippered England in seven of their eight fixtures. Remarkably, only one game was lost - against Wales at Brisbane - and Roger was an inspiration in the drawn game with Australia in Sydney and the victory over them at Wigan. In the final analysis Millward would have raised the World Cup but for that Welsh defeat.

In 1977 Millward led Great Britain on an equally close run thing in Australasia. He scored tries in all three preliminary matches but was denied the ultimate reward when Artie Beetson's Australia beat his team 13-12 in the final at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
